How We Calculate Fund Costs
The total cost of ownership of a mutual fund includes more than just the annual management fee. Multiple layers of fees can significantly drag down your portfolio's performance over long investment horizons. We account for the following categories:
- Management Fee: The annual charge taken by the fund manager to manage the investment portfolio (typically ranges from 0.50% to 2.50%).
- Subscription Fee: A one-time front-end fee charged when you purchase units of the fund (typically 0.00% to 3.00%).
- Total Expense Ratio (TER): The actual annual cost of ownership. It covers the management fee plus all other operational expenses including custody, audit, regulatory fees, and publishing expenses. The actual TER is always higher than the management fee alone.
- Redemption Fee: A back-end fee charged when you redeem or sell your units in the fund (typically 0.00% to 2.00%).
- Performance Fee: Charged by some managers as a percentage of profits exceeding a specified benchmark.
All data is gathered directly from fund Terms & Conditions documents and official audited Financial Reports filed by fund managers with the Saudi Capital Market Authority (CMA).
